From its creation, it was administered by the divisional officer until 1978 when the first municipal administrator was appointed by a presidential decree. In 1996, there was the introduction of a multi-party system. The first party which came to the municipality was the Cameroon national party. The first mayor was democratically elected and took over the administration of the area. Jakiri Council was created by presidential decree no, 86/1434 of 3rd December 1986. After its creation, it remained dormant and non-functional until 1987 when Fon Michael Fuma was appointed the first Municipal Administrator and ruled for nine years.
